20-22 June, 7.30pm, Department of Theatre, Film and Television Scenic Stage Theatre, Heslington East Campus, University of York

One of the greatest Jacobean comedies, John Marston’s masterpiece weaves together tales of sexual obsession, clever con-tricks, and radical freethinking into a striking plot which leads two of its characters to the foot of the gallows.

It was terrific! Pace; dynanism; such ease of performance and performed ease; wonderful, fluid and varied use of space; well-timed humour; nuance on the line and across the speech; real strength in depth across the cast (accented with a couple of points of completely delight-dispensing starriness within it); impressively efficient and smooth transitions/set adjustments/scene changes, with effectively tonally attuned transitional music where needed; physical choreography brilliantly handled. I loved it!
